She was reluctant to come in the first place but was talked into it by a friend, who promptly left her at the other end of the table, leaving her to swim in a sea of small talk, bad advice, old gossip and some kind of chicken main course that’s been left out too long. That third drink may have been a mistake, but right now it’s the only thing making the evening tolerable.
